Grit and Gray Skies: USC Rowing Navigates Tough Conditions at the Pittsburgh Scholastic Sprints

It wasn’t a day for the fair-weather rower. Yesterday on Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park, Upper Saint Clair Rowing faced down relentless rain and choppy water that their boat handling and resolve.

Despite the cool temperatures and the drizzle, our crews stayed locked in. This race kicked off our spring season and marked the very first regatta for several of our newest athletes. Congratulations to all our rowers who made their racing debut!

Since this event included both our high school and middle school squads, it was a fabulous opportunity for the entire program to come together for team building and “fun” in the rain. It was especially exciting to see the talent of our middle school rowers be rewarded for their hard work.

The Highlights:

  • Powering Through: Huge kudos to our Middle School Mixed 8+, who powered through the chop to navigate their way to a 2nd place finish!

  • Mental Toughness: The Men’s High School 8+ showed incredible focus in the spray, sprinting to a 3rd place medal finish.

  • Senior Leadership: Our seniors were a joy to watch as they began their final high school season. We are incredibly grateful for the leadership and experience they share with our up-and-coming rowers.

With roughly ten schools competing, the water was crowded and the competition was stiff, but USC showed up ready to work.

Looking Ahead:

The spring season is just heating up!

  • In two weeks: The High School team heads to the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship in Milford, Michigan.
  • In three weeks: The Middle School team rejoins the High School squad in Erie for the Mercyhurst Prep Regatta.

Stay tuned for more updates as we take on the rest of the spring!
